The Statistical Opportunity for Students (SOS) program is designed to help UBC graduate students formulate and understand the statistical issues involved in their research projects and is open year-round to all UBC graduate students. If you are a graduate student at UBC, you are eligible for a meeting with an ASDa consultant to discuss your project and address your statistical questions, following which you will receive a written summary with recommendations. This service is provided at no charge to you.

ASDa provides 2-hour webinar sessions that focus on the Fundamentals of Statistics and Reproducible Research that are geared towards a level that assumes no statistical background. A selection of six topics are offered throughout the academic year (Terms 1 and 2) by the Graduate Pathways to Success program. And past recordings of all 11 topics are accessible using the Campus Wide Login (CWL).

Although learning a statistical software is very advantageous, it needs to be used along with an understanding of the fundamentals of statistics. You can always get an answer from running an analysis in some software but that doesn’t mean what you have done is suitable or correct. Therefore it’s strongly recommended that you consult a statistician to make sure the approach you are using is appropriate for answering your intended question of interest, for the data you have and for how the data was collected.

The Faculty of Medicine Office of Research provided funding at various times from November 2019 to September 2022 for statistical assistance for their medical students undertaking research and scholarly projects.

ASDa provided a one-hour statistical consultation and summary report for 57 successful medical student applicants from this funding.
